Lewiston Receives 20th Tree City USA Award

The National Arbor Day Foundation and Idaho Department of Lands presented Mayor Doug Havens Lewiston’s 20th Tree City USA award during Arbor Month 2008. Lewiston has received Arbor Day Foundations’ “Growth Award” 14 times for doing more than Tree City USA guidelines.

Tree City USAWhen presented with Arbor Day Foundations’ Sterling Award commemorating its 10th “Growth Award”, Former Mayor Jeff Nesset stated, “Lewiston recognizes the importance infrastructure-role trees play in our community. We are committed to the scientific management of our urban forest.”

The National Arbor Day Foundation sets the standards for Tree Cities. To Qualify for Tree City USA designation cities must have:

  • A tree board or department
  • A tree care ordinance
  • A community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita
  • An Arbor Day observance and proclamation

To receive a Tree City USA Growth Award cities exceed the minimum Tree City USA standards and earn 10 points conducting activities in four categories;  Education and Public Relations, Partnerships, Planning and Management, and Tree Planting and Maintenance
