By city code, Lewiston’s Urban Forestry strives to provide residents with a diverse, healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and hazard free urban forest by managing existing trees, planting new trees, and by teaching the value of trees.

Beside beauty, trees provide economic benefits many times their cost including improving air quality through oxygen production; mitigation of global warming by sequestering carbon and pollutants; reducing storm water flows by trapping rain in leafy canopies; and their shade reduces the heat island effect caused by hardscapes and reduces energy consumption.
