8/21/2017 - If your drinking water is discolored, this is why.

The City of Lewiston will begin flushing hydrants throughout the Lewiston Water System August 27 through August 31, 2017, and again from September 17 through September 21, 2017. City crews will work from 6:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m.
This flushing could cause some discoloration of the drinking water. However, the water is safe to drink. To clear the water, a cold tap should be turned on and allowed to run until it clears. The hot water should also be checked for discoloration before running it into the washing machine.

Periods of low water pressure may be experienced during this flushing of the hydrants. Public Works asks that everyone, especially drivers, be extra careful during this time and take into account the possibility of water on the roadways.

The purpose of the hydrant flushing is to clean the water mains, obtain hydrant flows, and to check the mechanical condition of the fire hydrants.
