Experienced Police Officers - Lateral

THE CITY OF LEWISTON

Lewiston, Idaho is located in north central Idaho and has a very mild climate (average winter temperature of 41 degrees).  Excellent access to outdoor recreation including hunting, fishing, snow sports, boating, camping and beautiful wilderness areas.  There are three 4-year colleges plus a community college and vocational training options within a 35-mile radius.  Excellent medical facilities, cultural activities and endless options.  Lewiston operates under the Council/Manager form of government.  The population, over 32,000 residents, covers 16 square miles and has 179 miles of roadway.  The City is an AA/EOE-MFVH employer, has Minimum Substance Abuse Standards and has competitive benefits.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Department has 66 total employees, including 45 sworn officers, with a budget of 4.7 million dollars.  Major programs include patrol, traffic, investigation, support services, records, communications, crime prevention, a school resource officer program, police reserves, animal control and 911 emergency dispatch for all police, fire and ambulance units.

WORK SCHEDULE 

Patrol Officers have a 40 hour (four, 10 hour shifts) work week.  They bid for days off and to work either day, evening or night shifts.  Schedules are rotated every four months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS   Applicants Must:

  1. Be citizens of the United States.

  2. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.  Some college background is preferred

  3. Be of good moral character.  A complete background investigation of each applicant will be made.

  4. Be not less than 21 years of age.

  5. Be able to meet the physical requirements for a law enforcement officer in the State of Idaho, as prescribed by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.

  6. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

  7. Possess a minimum of twelve (12) months full-time job experience as a sworn, paid Municipal, County, State or Federal police officer under the guidelines established by the Idaho P.O.S.T. Academy.

  8. Must possess current certification as a law enforcement officer.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE  Officers who meet certification requirements will have their application reviewed and an appointment may be made for an oral interview.  A thorough background investigation including a truth verification examination and psychological evaluation will follow.  A medical examination, including drug testing, will be required prior to appointment.  Officers holding certification in another state will be required to complete all of the above, including attend Law Week and pass a P.O.S.T. Equivalency Test within their first year of employment, in conjunction with those requirements mandated by Idaho's Police Officers Standards and Training Council.
