What are the regulations for decorations/plantings at a gravesite?

A Planting Application (PDF) must be filled out and approved by the Parks and Recreation Director, or his/her designee, prior to planting.  All plantings must be done in the headstone row and on the individual’s plot. This should be considered when ordering a headstone, and a smaller headstone should be requested if a planting is desired.

Any oversized, or climbing, species of plant is prohibited. Any planting that would encroach on another person’s plot is also prohibited. Contact the Cemetery Office with specific questions. Check out the Cemetery Rules and Regulations (PDF) for more information.

The City’s Authority

The City has the authority to remove any flowers, trees, shrubs, or plants, as soon as they become unsightly, dangerous, or diseased, or when they do not conform to the standards maintained by the City. It is not recommended to plant or leave items of sentimental value at a gravesite in case they are damaged, stolen, etc. Artificial flowers are allowed but the placing of the following items is prohibited:

  • Boxes
  • Chairs
  • Glass
  • Iron cases
  • Metal designs
  • Ornaments
  • Settees
  • Shells
  • Toys
  • Vases
  • Wood
